The Disadvantages of Foam Core Cal Spas Hot Tub Covers

High quality spas like the Cal Spas also need high-quality aftermarket necessities, such as Cal Spas hot tub covers.  Considering the cost of repairs when the accumulation of dirt damages your spa’s massaging mechanism, as well as soaring heating bills, a spa cover is a worthy investment.  For starters, it insulates the hot water in your hot tub or spa, keeping it warm even during winter time.  It also protects your spa from the accumulation of dirt and grime from fallen leaves, insects, snow and anything that might contaminate or clog your spa’s massaging mechanisms.  It also protects your family and pets against injury from falling into the hot tub.

The first thing that usually comes to mind when thinking of Cal Spas spa covers are the thick, foam core variety.  While it’s not necessarily a bad idea to invest on one, you may want to consider other alternatives to the traditional foam core hot tub cover.  For starters, foam core hot tub covers are prone to water logging, i.e. accumulation of water droplets inside the foam core of the hot tub cover.  As the spa water evaporates and condenses underneath the hot tub cover, it brings along with it the chemicals in the spa water which eventually eats through the linings of your hot tub cover’s underside.  This then allows water to accumulate in the spa cover’s foam center.

Water logging can make the traditional foam core Cal Spas hot tub covers heavy and difficult to remove from the spa or hot tub.  It is also hazardous as it could injure you while you try to wrestle it off your hot tub or spa.  While you can purchase a cover lifter, that will be an additional cost on your part.  Apart from that, the soggy foam core makes an excellent environment for mildew growth, giving your hot tub an acrid moldy stench which is hard to remove.  In addition, water logging can also reduce the insulating capacity of your hot tub cover as it already allows the water vapor to seep into the porous foam center.

So, with all these said, it is good to explore other options when shopping for Cal Spas hot tub covers.  You can opt for a more economical tonneau type hot tub cover or an air-filled variety which are lighter and easier to remove from the hot tub.  Since they are placed on top, and not above the water, they can insulate your hot tub or spa’s hot water just as well as the rigid foam tub covers.  Plus, the non-foam core tub covers are a lot safer as they are lighter, thus making them a safer option when it comes to spa covers.
